Foundation and Structure

The CID-UNESCO is an independent, non-profitmaking organization. It was founded on November 12, 1973, with the support of UNESCO, its headquarters being in Paris.

In 1975 UNESCO recognized the CID as a non-governmental organization (NGO). It thus enjoys the same status as other important cultural organizations, such as the INTERNATIONAL MUSIC COUNCIL, the INTERNATIONAL MUSIC INSTITUTE, and the INTERNATIONAL THEATRE INSTITUTE, with whom its has established contacts.

The CID-UNESCO consists of founding members and active members, i. e. individual personalities and organizations, as well as honorary members. Among its members are bodies such as DANCE AND THE CHILD INTERNATIONAL and the INTERNATIONAL DANCE DOCUMENTATION CENTRE.

The aim to found National Committees consists in promoting the cooperation of dancers, choreographers and dance scholars as well as their participation in programmes aimed to preserve the national heritage in the field of dance. National Committees represent the dance culture of their country.
